If anything unites his varied work, it’s his attention to detail. ![]() Production designer Gerald Sullivan had the “eloquent hands” to design the campus itself, having worked on diverse projects such as Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, and next year’s Oscar Isaac–starring Life Itself. It’s not unlike a house in a Gothic movie think of the titular location in The Haunting of Hill House. The camera slowly pans to the Circle emerging on the horizon. The first time we see it in the film, which hits theaters April 28, is when recent college grad Mae ( Emma Watson) drives across the Dumbarton. They settled on a pristine stretch of rolling hills, east of San Francisco’s Dumbarton Bridge. “We had to decide where to put the campus,” says director James Ponsoldt, speaking at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco. The Circle, the starkly dystopian tech company at the center of Dave Eggers’s eponymous 2013 novel, is constantly described as beautiful: “The campus was vast and rambling, wild with Pacific color, and yet the smallest detail had been carefully considered, shaped by the most eloquent hands,” Eggers writes.īut actual tech campuses have taken up a lot of space in the Bay Area-leaving the novel’s adaptors with a puzzle to solve. ![]()
